i'm torn...

Posted by ayie on 9/9/2008

i've been going to taste of india on and off for years now. i guess i have kind of a love, hate relationship with the place. the staff is always very friendly, and they remember your face. the owners are almost always around making sure you're happy. and the food really is pretty tasty - i can't say i've ever had a meal there that i disliked. so why the lukewarm review? two things: first and foremost, the place is a bit of a dive. i've been going there for over ten years, and i swear they haven't dusted the fake plants that adorn every inch of the dining room in that time. they haven't thrown up a coat of paint or changed the carpet either. i can't tell you how many times i've got a plate at the lunch buffet that had some schmutz on it. i know this will be the kiss of death for some people, but it's convenient and tasty so we never seem to completely get away from the place. secondly, the food is heavy. there's a lot of oil, and you can definitely leave feeling like you just sucked down the contents of a fryalator. it's the kind of indian food you taste for three hours after you eat it. but it's good!

Chicken Shahi Korma Surprise

Posted by sb4480 on 4/3/2007

Last night my boyfriend and I had a craving for Indian Food so we decided to try somewhere new. We went to Taste of India on Wickendon St. in Providence. Our experience in the restaurant was great. We ordered several appetizers and the chicken curry and chicken shahi korma for our entrees. I'm a korma fanatic, I order it whenever I get Indian food. It was good but because I'd had the apps, I wasn't too hungry for it. This morning I decided I wanted to bring the leftovers for lunch. I heat it up and bring the container back to my desk. As I'm mindlessly eating in front of my computer I take a bite and notice an interesting texture, taste, and crunch. Figuring it's just a cardamum pod or something I pull it out. What I saw wasn't a cardamum pod, it was a cochroach. After spitting out the bite, swallowing back nausea, and rinsing my mouth with listerine I decided to write this review. With the exception of the cochroach in my food this restaurant wasn't bad. However unless you like a Fear-Factor'esque experience I reccommend you stay away from it.

Excellent indian food. Avoid last half hour of lunch buffett. Good customer service.

Food is excellent. Food tastes exquisite yet home cooking-like. Both times I went during dinner, I order the large platter with both meat and vegetable entrees (forgot the name of the platter). Plentiful amount of food and attention to detail in both taste and presentation of the entrees. I've also been to the lunch buffett three times as it is better in value. Buffett items change sometimes but the core buffett entrees remain the same. Avoid eating the lunch buffett near the end of the buffett period. They are a bit reluctant to cook more food. Overall, I recommend it. I continue to eat their often (once every 2-3 wks).
