Though construction of the Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul began in 1878, it took another 11 years for construction to end, and the church was finally consecrated in 1889. Its design is distinctly Gothic, reflecting the dominant architectural features of cathedrals in Europe, with a large stained glass rose window providing much of the light and detailed statues interspersed amongst the wall's inspiring painted religious images and interior architectural detailing. The cathedral's majestic pair of brown sandstone spires reach high over Cathedral Square in the heart of the city, a few miles north of Rhode Island Hospital.
